In 1996 the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce joined in a long-range planning process known as “Alleghany 2000 and Beyond.” That process was to explore ways in which the image and vitality of Main Street, Sparta, could be improved. Thus was established the Sparta Hometown Revitalization Task Force as a vehicle to put the process in motion. In 2000 the group changed its name to the Sparta Revitalization Committee (SRC).

Sparta was officially named to the prestigious list of Main Street Communities in North Carolina on April 28, 1998. The Main Street approach towards our main street is a comprehensive revitalization process designed to improve all aspects of the downtown, producing both intangible and tangible benefits.
